A new approach to furniture manufacturing: more circular, more responsible, and engineered to extend product lifecycles without compromising design.
Sustainability is no longer an added value in furniture design, but an essential requirement for addressing the environmental challenges of today and tomorrow. In this context, the circular economy has become one of the key approaches to transforming the way we design, manufacture, and manage product lifecycles, promoting solutions that reduce environmental impact without compromising quality, functionality, or design.
Born from this vision, Bow Chair Eco Plus is the evolution of one of esPattio’s most iconic designs. This new development is part of the European R-Evolve project, an initiative that demonstrates how existing products can be redesigned to become more circular, extend their service life, and facilitate recycling at the end of their lifecycle.

What is the R-Evolve project?
R-Evolve is a project supported by the European Union with the aim of promoting circularity within the European furniture sector. To achieve this goal, it brings together 23 organisations from different countries, including private companies, universities, technology centres, and industry associations, working together to develop new sustainable design methodologies.
The initiative seeks to rethink the way products are conceived from the very beginning. Beyond simply manufacturing with recycled materials, R-Evolve promotes a comprehensive approach based on ecodesign, resource reuse, and the creation of products designed to be easily disassembled, repaired, and recycled. In this way, it drives a more responsible production model aligned with the principles of the circular economy.
esPattio’s role
As part of this European project, esPattio has developed a pilot project focused on the redesign of an established product in the market: Bow Chair. The challenge was to analyse its design, identify the elements that hindered its recyclability, and propose a solution capable of significantly improving its environmental performance while maintaining the features that have made it a benchmark within the esPattio catalogue.
This project demonstrates that innovation does not always mean creating a completely new product. In many cases, true progress lies in evolving existing designs to adapt them to current sustainability needs, increasing their recyclability, extending their service life, and reducing the impact associated with the end of their lifecycle.
Bow Chair Eco Plus
Bow Chair represents a clear example of how to apply the principles of the circular economy to an existing product. The original version consisted of an internal metal structure, which was subsequently covered with padding made of polyurethane foam. This combination made it practically impossible to separate both materials once the product reached the end of its service life, turning it into a product that was difficult to recycle and, in many cases, destined for landfill.

The new Bow Chair Eco Plus completely rethinks this construction solution. The internal metal structure has been replaced by a structure made from thermoplastic with a high percentage of recycled material, allowing it to be easily separated from the foam at the end of its service life. Thanks to this improvement, the recycling process becomes much simpler and more efficient, promoting material recovery and significantly reducing the product’s environmental impact.

A design for the Europe of the future
Bow Chair reflects an increasingly prominent trend in the contract sector: designing products by considering their entire lifecycle. From material selection to disassembly and recycling, each stage plays a strategic role in reducing resource consumption and minimising waste generation.
These types of initiatives also highlight the value of collaboration between companies, institutions, and research centres. Projects such as R-Evolve enable innovation to move from the laboratory to the market, demonstrating that sustainability can be integrated into real products without compromising design, ergonomics, or user experience.
At esPattio, we believe that design has the ability to generate a positive impact on both spaces and the environment. Bow Chair Eco Plus represents this commitment to a new generation of more responsible furniture, where innovationand the circular economy work together to build a more sustainable future.
